Good morning, Crew.

Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum. Join us, please.

That bleach blonde bouffant, those heavily mascaraed eyes, those evening gowns—you know you’re in for that smokey voice.

Dusty Springfield was born in London in 1939. It’s true, the British Queen of Blue Eyed soul is a Londoner. Her first solo release, “I Only Want to Be With You”, was produced similarly to Phil Spector’s Detroit Wall of Sound. The song peaked at number 4 on the British charts. With that, Dusty hit it big before the Beatles.

Ms. Springfield always had a love for the Detroit style. That included Motown performers. Her music popularized the Motown sound with audiences in the UK. She’s still remembered by black Britons for, even at the height of her popularity, refusing to sign on for gigs unless they also signed black acts. This was unheard of over there at the time.

Ms Springfield’s later album Dusty in Memphis never reached the popularity of her earlier hits. Maybe her UK audience didn’t care as much for that assumed C&W twang.

This is, as usual, an open thread.
