I’m no fan of Fox News. To me, “replacement theory” should involve switching out Rupert Murdoch’s claques of fact-free firebrands for flocks of talking point-spewing macaws.
Take Tucker Carlson (please). On-air this past week, he wondered why “we” should continue to forgo what he admits would be a Bay of Pigs-style foray into Canada. (Yes, really.)
Somewhere (perhaps in a DeSantis-certified history text), he must have read that our 1961 misadventure in Cuba worked wonders. Not quite. For starters, its mission (regime change) miserably failed. Beyond that, it pushed the globe to the point of exploding (a la the loaded stogie the CIA tried to foist on Fidel Castro).
At least since the Cuban Missile Crisis era, a pattern has emerged. From Vietnam to Iraq to Ukraine, folks have not taken kindly to the prospect of losing control of their respective homelands.
Granted, Iraq’s pre-2003 leader was no swell. But still. George ‘WMD’ Bush and cohorts scared us silly with whoppers about how Saddam Hussein endangered us- and then, even according to Ayn Rand acolyte Alan Greenspan, invaded and occupied Mesopotamia to liberate the oil, stupid.
As it happens, the Great White North’s proven reserves total some 171 billion barrels. Could that be sheer coincidence, Mr. Carlson, sir?
Lo and behold, the history here speaks volumes. Brimming with bravado, in 1812 “we” tried to seize Upper Canada’s Fort Malden. Things did not go well. After claiming to be “prepared for every exigency,” US General William Hull wound up surrendering his entire army.
With apologies to SCTV’s McKenzie Brothers: we figured we’d hose ‘em. But we got hosed, eh? (That is, temporarily. At length, the fort was torched by a fleeing British general. But eastern Upper Canada held on. For our part, a year after Malden’s burning, near Baltimore Harbor, we thwarted some British invaders. Francis Scott Key wrote some lyrics. And life went on.)
At length, we made peace with Canada. In two World Wars, we fought on the same side.
After the second one, we literally joined forces. So. Tucker, have you heard of NATO? Smack on its face, it’s our side’s alliance against such evildoers as Donald Trump’s would-be “best friend” (quoting a 2013 letter), Vladimir Putin.
Mincing no words, NATO posits an attack on one member nation as an attack on all. For instance, when 15 Saudis (and 4 others) flew commercial jets into strategic targets on our turf, we were Canada’s friend in need; she, ours indeed.
If only Trump’s cult could boast such fealty. Lest we ‘forget,’ on 1/6/21, it heeded Big Blonder’s roars to “fight like hell….to take back our (sic) country.” Speaking for the whole GOP, the Republican National Committee officially calls that coup attempt “legitimate political discourse.”
Let it be stressed: such normalization of sedition can’t help but aid and comfort more than a few “enemies...domestic.”
So, do you renounce such stuff, Tucker? On the face of it, you do not. Indeed, if one didn’t know better, one would swear (as in a loyalty oath) that you back the RNC to the bloody hilt.
Not to put too fine a point on it: invading Canada would ape Putin’s rape of Ukraine. By effectively destroying NATO, it would suit Vlad the Mad Emir to a “T.”
As in Trump. Tucker. Treason. And yes, the terribly tepid response (to date) from our sole remaining non-despotic major party.
Which, in fact, needs to stop letting itself get (so to speak) snowed. Now. If not sooner.
