Motorola’s chief of portable communication products, John F. Mitchell, encouraged his team to make the first cell phone and was crucial in the development of the technology.
On April 3, 1973, Motorola engineer, Martin Cooper, rang his rival, Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs, from the first cell phone. The world had just witnessed its first mobile phone call. Later that day, Martin Cooper and his colleagues went to a news conference and revolutionized communication technology.
Motorola’s cell phone was called DynaTAC 8000X. . It weighed around 2 kg (4.4 lb) and had to be charged for 10 hours for 30 minutes of talk time. After 10 years and $100 million in development costs, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x was released to the market in 1983. The first commercial cell phone provided 30 minutes of talk time, could store 30 phone numbers, and cost $3,995.
From Zippia:
There are 294.15 million smartphone users in the United States.
85% of American adults use smartphones.
Approximately 47% of web traffic in the U.S. originated from mobile devices.
Apple is the top smartphone in the U.S., with more than 113 million iPhone users.
I finally got a cellphone from Costco, when they offered one free! if I would sign up for Verizon. I was slow to embrace its use, though I liked the GPS. During our recent lunch with maggiejean she reminded me of our cellphone adventure, as we returned from San Francisco after a Kossack event. We got lost and I handed my phone to her and told her what buttons to push. Somehow she managed to Bork the phone into unusability. But we had a fine time exploring San Francisco until, by noting where the bay was, we found the Golden Gate Bridge and made it back to Sonoma County.
I use my new iPhone mostly to take photos. I know many folks here and everywhere use theirs as their main computer. I am appalled by situations in which use of a cellphone is required! “Give me your cell number. We’ll call you when your table is ready.” Texting is a drag. I do try to turn my phone on at least once a week….just in case. I stick with old fashioned tech, my laptop.
