Israeli-made Harop drones in a launching truck during a Dec. 2022 military parade in the Azeri capital of Baku.
Apologies for being unable to forbear from making the obvious Star Wars joke, but the moment mysterious explosions were reported in Iran, I suspected that Ukraine had teamed up with Azerbaijan to finally payback the Ayatollahs for supplying weapons to Russia, knowing they are being used to kill women and children in Ukraine.
Ryan McBeth (@RyanMcBethProgramming), who intentionally dresses like “a guy in a bathrobe on YouTube,” but is actually one of the best popular defense experts you never see on TV, reports that his sources in Iran have reported strikes all over the country, and he has also received a photo of one of these Israeli-made Harop drones.
Iran attacked last night by an unknown party

(But seriously, folks) With a wingspan of just 3 meters (less than 10 feet) and carrying a warhead of just 23 kg (51 lbs), McBeth points out that Israel is too far away to hit where these drones might have landed in Iran. However, the sites targeted are perfectly within the 1000 km (620 mi) range of these drones from Azeri territory. Hmm…
Iran and Azerbaijan are in a dispute involving Armenia, someone just murdered an Azeri embassy staff member in Tehran, and in response, Azerbaijan has evacuated its embassy in the Iranian capital. Whatever happens next, Iran not only faces additional attacks from Azerbaijan, but Ukraine also has a beef with Iran, and at least experimental drones with a range up to 900 km that they could try out on on them.
As one DailyKos wit has noted, when you have so many enemies (and such a poor military intelligence infrastructure) that you don’t know who just attacked you, you have problems — and you’re probably Iran.
