“Huh,” I said, looking down at him. “I guess I can’t go yet.”
You can’t move if you have a cat on your lap. That’s the law.
I leaned back and relaxed, kicking my shoes off and reclining my seat. Might as well get comfortable, I thought, since judging from how asleep he looked I wouldn’t be moving for a while. I stroked his fur and felt myself getting sleepy.
The gym could wait.
Tuesday
I set my phone down and sighed. I was sitting up in bed, the pillow behind my back, the blankets over my legs. I probably should have exercised to start my day, but I had decided on a leisurely breakfast instead. It was nice to sometimes relax in the morning before going to work.
My time was up, however, and I needed to get moving if I wanted to be on time to work.
It was time to get up.
I slapped my blanketed thighs with the palms of hands.
As if summoned, Freddie jumped up onto the bed and walked over to me. He plopped down across my thighs and started to purr.
“Fredddddddieeee,” I whined. “I have to get up!”
“Pet me,” he demanded. I obeyed.
I puffed up my cheeks and blew out my breath. “We can’t do this,” I told him, my petting hand not stopping. “I have to get up.”
“Sleepy,” he murmured.
“Me too,” I agreed. “But I have to go to work so I can buy your kibble.”
He didn’t answer, asleep enough that he was twitching.
I picked up my phone to check the time. “Oh my gosh!” I exclaimed. “I’m so late!”
Still Tuesday
I wiggled a little in my seat, hoping to put off the inevitable. The movie I was watching was intense and fast paced, in French with English subtitles. It required my full attention.
But something else required my attention too. Immediately.
“Shoot,” I said, looking around for the remote. I found it and paused the movie.
Freddie chose that moment to climb onto my lap.
“This isn’t going to work,” I told him, watching as he made himself comfortable.
“I have to get up,” I tried again, automatically petting him while he closed his eyes and purred.
“Shoot,” I said again, grudgingly restarting the movie. My comfort was simply going to have to wait.
Wednesday
Dressed in my workout clothes, I sat on the edge of my bed to put my shoes on.
Freddie rubbed his head and then his whole body against my back.
“I have to exercise,” I told him apologetically.
“Sit back,” he insisted, patting my biceps with one paw.
I sighed and obeyed, letting him drape himself over my thighs. Petting him I said, affectionately, “you can’t keep doing this.”
Thursday
I shook my water bottle, hearing the ice clink against the side of the insulated metal walls but hearing no water. I lifted the bottle to my lips anyway, but was rewarded with nothing.
I shook the bottle, hoping to at least loose some ice to chew.
Nothing.
I coughed a little, thirsty. It was time to get up and refill the bottle.
Like magic, as soon as I had the thought Freddie appeared, stepping onto my lap. He circled a few times, then gently lowered himself so he lay stretched and wedged between my legs.
“How do you always know?!” I demanded.
He ignored me, laying his head over my left ankle.
Friday
It was already nine o’clock and I hadn’t started writing yet. I was sure what the topic would be, but sometimes it helped to just start writing and let the story direct itself.
I picked up a throw pillow to use as a table for my laptop. Before I could set it on my lap, Freddie walked over and pushed his way past the pillow in my hand to settle right where I had intended to put it.
I sighed. “Is this intentional?” I asked.
“Warm,” he said, stretching before he settled down on my lap.
I shook my head and dropped the pillow. Observing him with a cocked head, I thought about my situation. With a shrug, I gently set the laptop on top of him and got to work.
Happy Caturday, Peeps! Freddie has a very particular sixth sense where he always knows when I want to get up. Do your pooties have the same talent?
