Charles F. Coleman Jr. is a seasoned civil rights attorney and legal analyst. Often appearing on MSNBC, CNN et al discussing civil rights, race and the law.

Until last night I hadn’t heard anyone discuss the elephant in the room when it came to the speed with which charges were brought against the 5 former Memphis Police Officers for the murder of Tyre Nichols. That elephant of course is the race of all five officers. ALL five are Black. Yes, their actions are just as heinous no matter what their race, but don’t let the speed of the charges brought overcome why there was little to no hesitancy in the quickness of the charges. Blue in this instance didn’t protect Black.

Charles Coleman on 11th Hour last night. His comments on race begin at about 8:10, but those addressing the officers begins around 9:10.

Daily Kos won’t let me embed the video from MSNBC so that’s why there’s a link above.

Some people will quickly point to the murder of George Floyd and say there were officers of color involved there as well. The answer to that is the murder of George Floyd occurred in front of multiple witnesses with cameras and other publicly accessible cameras.

Next, some would point out that the officers involved were quickly fired for their actions. The response for that point is they were fired because of a strong Black woman, Police Chief Cerelyn Davis who wasn’t going to let the murder of Tyre Nichols by five of her officers stand, regardless of the race of the officers involved. But even her actions could have been thwarted by the Blue Wall had even one white officer been involved.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking progress was made in holding police accountable. The progress made is only because the officers involved don’t have the cover of a white officer shielding them.
