Hi beer fans, happy Friday!
Every kind of business looks at how much it should stick to tradition in its products and its public image, and how much to update either of those things. Coca-Cola’s “New Coke” is the great example of getting this wrong.
In the world of beer, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale still has the same recipe and same label as when it was released in 1986. It made them rich, why change? Last week I was drinking Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale, another old school classic; they’ve updated the label, but it still tastes the same.
New Belgium is about to go the extreme route: they’re changing everything about their flagship Fat Tire Ale except the name.
The new recipe is designed to be “crisper” and “brighter” in hopes of attracting a new generation of drinkers, a brewery statement said. The label, which used to designate it an amber ale, now reads “Fat Tire Ale.” After the makeover, Fat Tire more closely resembles a blonde ale than an amber ale — it’s lighter in color and body, with a subtle grainy sweetness in both aroma and flavor. Compared with the old recipe, its flavor profile is less complex, losing many of the caramel and bready notes that made it famous and inspired countless knockoff over the years. The recipe’s alcohol content remains the same at 5.2%, but the International Bitterness Units (IBUs) – a measure of a beer’s hop profile – have decreased slightly, to 15 from 22.
I might like New Fat Tire better; amber ale is not one of my favorite styles. But if I want a blonde ale I’ll probably go with Firestone 805.

I planned poorly and have no cold beer right now. I’d go to 7-11 but my friend will be here soon anyway and we’ll go get beer and dinner.
What are you drinking? Is anyone brewing?
