Woke As Hell

WHAT IS WOKE?

We will be hearing a lot of “woke” discussion in the coming two year run up to the next election. Some politicians have discovered an all encompassing word they can hurl at all the things about the mostly made up policies they like to pretend Democrats stand for. In 2016 and 2020 they ran against “cancel culture” but that sort of fell by the wayside when Republican lawmakers started canceling things like books in schools and firing people who pushed back on their policies. DeSantis can hardly get a sentence out without saying the word.

You also hear it used a lot by mostly influential white guys with large social media platforms who don’t like to be questioned about their business practices or the socially damaging things they can say that influences people who look to them as leaders of commerce or role models. They take offense when anyone questions their lack of sensitivity to workers or amassing wealth that doesn’t seem to benefit society. One thing they all seem to have in common is their sensitivity to being criticized on social media which is ironic given this is one of the main complaints they have about “woke” folks.

In the coming months when you hear “woke” coming out of people’s mouths and have a question what it means, it might be an interesting experiment to ask them to define “woke”. I have found that it is just another catchall pejorative designation for those who don’t see the world as they do and don’t like to be called out. I haven’t gotten the same answer twice by the way. Whatever their pet grievance is finds its way in to their answer; be it immigration, LBGTQ, Black Lives Matter, taxes. Reading between the lines, there does seem to be a common underlying thread however.

The original meaning of the word is important to mention here I think.

It was used in certain cultural communities to designate someone who understood that there were inequalities in society and was willing to speak out about it. You may see why this can be a threat to those who dominant the strata of power in society as it is currently structured. They like where they are positioned and if you challenge that you must be woke. This is not a new development, just a new word to categorize and intimidate those who push back.

I hope I am woke as hell.
