The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns. We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. As I was ready to head for home, I heard the sounds of a small bird foraging. I slowly turned and took a few photos. The title photo and picture below is the Song Sparrow I saw.

When I got home, I noticed that the right foot of the Sparrow looked odd (look within the red circle). A bit of exploration led me to Avipoxvirus. Here is a link that will explain it further.

There is good news and bad news concerning this virus within the article. The worst case is that there are varieties of the virus that are airborne and contagious between bird species through mosquito transmission. This was researched heavily in the 1990’s when Wild Turkey populations were effected in Mississippi. A link to the source material.

The better news is that the virus can be managed through environmental measures.

I will be at work when this article publishes. I don’t want my absence (until I return this afternoon ) to hinder any discussions. So, what is happening in your area?
