Kings and Generals is one of the best YouTube channels for military history, featuring well animated maps and attempting to credit units and commanders for their roles. They have just released a half-hour video of their first major report from Ukraine, on the battle for Kyiv from the Chernobyl axis of attack.

It does a superb job of describing the strategies and tactics employed by both sides, pointing out a couple of major battles along that line of contact I was unaware of. It is also worth noting just how much didn’t make it in — 5 weeks of constant probing, blitzing, and strikes-behind-the-lines would require a video longer than 30 minutes to capture such a complex battle.

Also, many of the details are still unknown, though I suspect there is a depth of knowledge on this site to fill some of that in, from Markos and Mark Summer and annieli and all the others who relentlessly scoured social media and foreign news for scraps to clarify the war as it occurred.

Kings and Generals is a great channel for describing ancient battles, taking a great deal of effort to set the political stage before and after a battle or war to explain the conflict’s significance in history. I’m excited to see them taking the Invasion of Ukraine on so early — it will be a good tool as the purveyors of disinformation will be ramping up the revisionism moving into the 2024 election cycle.
