This is one of 33 mass shootings in the opening weeks of 2023, if you define a mass shooting as one in which four people, not including the shooter, are shot. That’s the definition used by the Gun Violence Archive and CNN. Firearm injuries are the leading cause of death for people under 24, in a country with more than one gun for every person. And too often children are the shooters: There were more than 2,000 unintentional shootings by children between 2015 and 2020.
x We’d planned to publish a story this morning about a 6-year-old who shot his teacher, but didn’t, because someone else shot two dozen people last night.

Officials across California and the country responded to the Monterey Park shooting.
“A time of a cultural celebration … and yet another community has been torn apart by senseless gun violence,” Vice President Kamala Harris said on Sunday as she visited Tallahassee, Florida.
”So Doug and I join the president and Dr. Biden, and I know everyone here, in mourning for those who were killed, as we pray for those who are injured, and as we grieve for those many people whose lives are forever changed. All of us in this room and in our country understand this violence must stop.”
“Spent time in Monterey Park today meeting with leaders and those impacted by this terrible tragedy. The strength of this community is incredible,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom tweeted Sunday evening. “No other country in the world is terrorized by this constant stream of gun violence. We need real gun reform at a national level.”
“I still have questions in my mind, which is, what was the motive for this shooter? Did he have a mental illness? Was he a domestic violence abuser? How did he get these guns, and was it through legal means? Well, those questions will have to be answered in the future,” Rep. Judy Chu, who represents Monterey Park in Congress, said on Sunday evening.
“Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones tonight in our neighboring city, Monterey Park, where a mass shooting just occurred,” Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia tweeted. Mejia is the first Asian American to hold citywide office in L.A.
Meanwhile, the nation waits for news of the next mass shooting to break.
