Understanding, Inclusion, Healing and Intersectionality being practiced by students and teachers alike in the United States of America today - photo by Ambrosebear

A quick Google search of the term “Intersectionality” tells us that it “is a legitimate approach for studying and challenging power, as it exists, is produced, and is reinforced systemically and structurally. As such, it is crucial for addressing structural power imbalances that inhibit progress toward UN Sustainable Development Goals.”

Why, you should be asking yourselves, is this study of intersectionality and making progress toward UN Sustainable Development goals a threat to Ron Desantis? It seems to me, and I could be wrong, that Ron Desantis’ obvious bias against the teaching of intersectionality could be influenced by his short-term experience as a torture coach at GITMO. Or, is he simply just another bigot who escaped public scrutiny of his dangerous character and stealthy slipped past voters under cover of Trump’s coat-tails in the 2016 election cycle?

We learned that the Intersectional bias that Desantis appears to be promoting is defined as “a form of discrimination which targets all populations with different, sensitive identity types with respect to: gender, race, age, sexuality, religion, disability, etc.” It seems that Desantis’ version of bias is riddled throughout his recent “woke-based” library and school “media” policies attempting to prohibit the teaching and better understanding of serious and important Intersectional issues; prohibitions that prevent healing, reconciliation, restitution, integration and reintegration into main stream society by those affected by such bigotry and systemic discrimination.

Desanti’s current displays of obvious bigotry should disgust every sane person. Teaching inclusiveness, stopping abuse of the powerless in all forms, and enforcing existing federal, human rights laws and international human rights conventions consistently must be promoted to challenge Desantis’ “woke-based” censorship policies and to stop this racist bully’s unsustainable power grab.

Ron Desantis appears fully aware that the sensitive people he now targets with his “woke-based” education policies actually represent the growing majority of American voters in Florida and throughout the United States. He knows they can stop him through the democratic voting process especially after receiving the awareness a study of Intersectionality issues and response strategies can provide them. and why systemic racism and marginalization will continue in Florida unless they do stop it by voting out elected officials who promote such education and censorship policies. That’s why he’s doing it, in my view.

He knows that with civics education comes civic action. And, Desantis does not want a political future facing voters armed with a diverse civics education and intersectional strategies, and who can then, once they inevitably achieve voting age, vote him out to stop him and anyone like him who would rear their ugly, facist heads with similar forms of fear-based power grabbing, discrimination and attempts to target and marginalize disabled, elderly, impoverished, powerless or sensitive people.

Ron Desantis’ “woke-based”, anti-education policies represent a form of long-term, undemocratic, voter suppression tactics. These are the very issues that help to explain why the teaching of such “Intersectional” issues and strategies must remain part of our public education curriculum. An education that can address such tactics and prepare students to better understand and value their own culture and not fear the different perspectives and equally valuable cultures of others.

We can and should implement the UN’s inclusive and healing policy on sustainable development locally by learning about and practicing intersectionality-based strategies that Ron Desantis and his “woke-based” ilk desperately fear by opposing Desatis’ soviet-style, anti-democratic information and education media censorship laws and policies.
