Today is an important date, the 50th Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade ruling which gave us the right, nationally, to make our own decisions about reproductive healthcare and abortion. Because Roe v. Wade was overturned this past spring, people marked Roe v. Wade’s 50th by demonstrating across the country, especially in states where reproductive rights and freedoms have already been taken away.

When I ran for the Virginia House of Delegates 55th District seat in 2021, people told me not to talk about abortion rights. I did so anyway because I know that access to legal reproductive healthcare and abortion is favored by the vast majority of Americans and Virginians, even in more conservative and rural areas, where I talk to voters all of the time. I was endorsed by NARAL Virginia, Vote Pro Choice, and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia, and I raised turnout by 30% from 2019.

I know that abortion isn't the right choice for everyone, for many reasons, and I know how to compromise when it comes to getting things done, but I don't compromise on our rights and freedoms. I oppose government-forced pregnancies and births and will protect Virginians' reproductive rights, freedoms, and choices when I am in the General Assembly.

Even though the majority of Virginians support access to abortion and contraception, because Roe v. Wade was overturned and our current House of Delegates majority and Governor are trying to end access to reproductive healthcare in Virginia, Virginia could join the ranks of states that compel government-forced pregnancies and births, if we don't win the majority back.

As I remember why I decided to run in 2021 and why I'm running again in the newly drawn 59th Virginia House of Delegates District, access to reproductive healthcare and abortion care, and legal access to those services are at the top of the list of reasons. I ask you to remember to support candidates like me who run in more conservative and more rural districts. We are on the front lines of countering extremism and showing the citizenry that there is an alternative and that maintaining our democracy, rights, and freedoms, including reproductive rights and freedoms, is vital. While messy and challenging, this work is worth it. But we can't do it alone. We need your help. Please volunteer for and donate to candidates in races like mine.

ALL of our rights and freedoms depend on it.
