Good morning, All. For today’s diary I present Grzegorz Kosinski’s rendition of Beethoven’s famous piece on his electric bass. But first

A Beethoven piano sonata on a modern stringed instrument? Why not? Granted, a few classical musicians have no time for anything electric. Some purists even pooh pooh modern pianos as not authentic to Beethoven’s true intention for the piece. Yet Beethoven himself called the piano “a most unsatisfactory instrument.” Some believe he would approved of the increased range and the increased sturdiness of today’s pianos. Or maybe it was simply because he was going deaf. We can’t be sure.

On the other hand, many other classical musicians are sure that Baroque, Classical, etc. composers would have been glad to have our modern electric instruments available. Even if they wouldn’t have used them in every composition they would have liked having them in their arsenals. Wherever you stand on the question I’m sure the composers would have enjoyed knowing skilled musicians were still playing their music.

This is, as always, an open thread.
