Mass shooting leaves at least 10 dead in California [1]

At least 10 people were killed in a mass shooting in Monterey Park, California, late Saturday night. At least 10 more were taken to hospitals “and are listed in various conditions from stable to critical,” Capt. Andrew Meyer, a sheriff’s department spokesman, said at an early Sunday news conference. The gunman is still at large.
The shooting came not long after the end of a Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park, a town east of Los Angeles where the population is 65% Asian. It took place at a local business described as a “ballroom dance location.”
“When officers arrived on scene, they observed numerous individuals, patrons ... pouring out of the location, screaming. The officers made entry to the location and located additional victims,” Meyer said.
The Los Angeles Times reports that there was an incident, details unknown, in nearby Alhambra, with Meyer saying “we have investigators on scene trying to determine if there’s a connection between these two incidents.”
The police have said only that the shooter had a firearm, but the Los Angeles Times reports that, according to witnesses, it was a semiautomatic long gun and the shooter was able to reload. The only description released of the shooter is that he’s male. The motive is unknown, but investigators are considering the possibility that it was a hate crime.
Monterey Park has canceled its second day of Lunar New Year celebrations.
