Postcards

We have been politically active for much of our lives, but after the unconscionable election of 2016 we knew we had to swing into serious opposition. We started to join with and work with various local groups. We did some texting, wherein we could contact hundreds of voters with a script, and answer those who responded. As non-texters ourselves, this was unsatisfying. So then we began post carding, at first with a group at someone’s home (we’re still tight with this original group). As time went on we worked with other groups at many other venues.

Subsequently the number of completed cards increased to many thousands personally and hundreds of thousands from Sonoma County. As I check the credit card bill I see how much we spend buying cards from our local post office. At an Indivisible meeting someone cited statistics demonstrating that postcards were the most effective voter contact method. Research on Google seemed to agree:

This study suggests that, while not all effects are statistically significant in this study, postcards performed the best for increasing turnout, followed by social pressure mailers, and controls turned out the least.

Since the beginning of the pandemic our post carding meetings have been on Zoom, but less cards get written due to the inevitable political (and social) discussions. Mrs. side pocket has recruited neighbors and these are very effective. We do what we can.
