Maybe I’m misinformed, but my understanding is that the US has a missile available right now, the GLSDB, which is shorter range than the ATACMS, which can be launched by HIMARS and M270, and has a max range of 150KM or so.
HIMARS and M270 wrecked Russia’s dreams by making their logistics much more difficult because its range and accuracy put supply depots within 50KM or so at risk. This is widely considered to be one of the biggest Ukrainian success stories of this horrible war by greatly reducing re-supply of Russia’s front line units.
With GLSDB Ukraine would be able to force virtually all of Russia’s supply depots back into Russia itself without the horrendous land war needed to get closer because of the range limitation of the current missiles available to Ukraine. The GLSDB missiles are less powerful but when you hit an ammo dump it doesn’t take much to make big boom-booms. When you hit the ammo dumps Russia is screwed.
This could be done right now. One big transport plane could carry enough GLSDB missiles to wreck Russia’s dreams of a successful spring offensive.
I suppose those missiles could be used to attack cross border targets, but Ukraine has proven itself to be led by responsible and dependable adults who I believe would use these munitions wisely and within the parameters allowed. It would be much better, and lower in casualties, to use the stand-off weapons to destroy Russia’s ability to fight than slug it out, even with some main battle tanks.
