I am reading:
Patricia Highsmith: Her Diaries and Notebooks 1941-1955 by Patricia Highsmith and Anna von Planta - Read 1948 and 1949, really busy years for Highsmith. She rewrites and then sells her first novel, Strangers on a Train, goes off to the Yaddo retreat (she lets Truman Capote sublet her apartment while she’s at Yaddo), she sees a psychiatrist in an attempt to cure her homosexuality, tours Europe...
March 6, 1948 Visited Dr. Rudolf Löwenstein, psychoanalyst, last week— Monday. For the first time, I told a stranger that “I am homosexual.” And he listened to the story of my life. And said that my case will take about two years. A bit discouraging, but I felt better, just because I had told someone. Truman jokes: “When I was 14, I told my parents that everyone was interested in girls, but that I, T.C., was interested in boys!” And they let him be. Don’t want to go back to Löwenstein.
September 21, 1949 ...Now I know why I keep a diary, I am not at peace until I continue the thread into the present. I am interested in analyzing myself, in trying to discover the reasons why I do such and such. I cannot do this without dropping dried peas behind me to help me retrace my course, to point a straight line in the darkness.
