Three active-duty Marines who work in intelligence – one of whom allegedly espoused support for a second civil war – were arrested this week for breaching the US Capitol building with a mob of Trump supporters on January 6, 2021. Cpl. Micah Coomer and Sgts. Joshua Abate and Dodge Dale Hellonen are facing several charges, including disorderly conduct in a Capitol building. (snip) According to military records, Coomer is an Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance System Engineer based out of Camp Pendleton in California. The Marines — Sgt. Joshua Abate, Sgt. Dodge Dale Hellonen and Cpl. Micah Coomer — spent about an hour inside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, as the mob sought to halt certification of Joe Biden’s presidential victory by Congress, according to the court documents dated Jan. 17. The three Marines face four misdemeanor charges each — two counts of disorderly conduct, one count of knowingly entering a restricted building, and one count of parading, demonstrating or picketing in the Capitol. FBI investigators identified the three Marines using public and private social media posts and phone and military records, according to the court documents. Coomer posted images showing them participating in the insurrection, in which he wrote he was “Glad to be a part of history,” federal investigators said. In private social media posts obtained via a search warrant, Coomer voiced support for a “Civil War 2,” investigators said. (snip) A Marine spokesperson said the service was “aware of an investigation and the allegations” against Abate, Hellonen and Coomer and confirmed all three remained on active duty at three different locations in the United States. All three work in intelligence-related fields, according to their military records. “The Marine Corps is fully cooperating with the appropriate authorities in support of the investigation,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Coomer was identified by a member of the Marine Corps stationed with him at Quantico, according to the filing. (snip) “[O]n or about June 1, 2022, ABATE was interviewed as part of his security clearance,” the statement of facts says. “During the interview, ABATE discussed entering the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6, 2021 with two ‘buddies’. ABATE stated they walked through the U.S. Capitol and in the Rotunda. While in the Rotunda, ABATE’s friend smoked a cigarette and they ‘walked around and tried not to get hit with tear gas’. ABATE also admitted he heard how the event was being portrayed negatively and decided that he should not tell anybody about going into the U.S. Capitol Building.” According to the Marine Corps, Hellonen, a sergeant, enlisted in 2017. Abate, also a sergeant, and Coomer, a corporal, enlisted in 2018. All three are indicated as being on active duty.

The men spent about 52 minutes inside the Capitol, authorities say. At one point while in the rotunda, they put a red “Make American Great Again” hat on a statue to take pictures with it, according to court papers. Hellonen was carrying a “Don’t Tread on Me” flag, authorities said. (snip) During an interview related to his security clearance in June, Abate acknowledged walking through the Capitol with two “buddies,” investigators said. Abate said they “walked around and tried not to get hit with tear gas." The Pentagon said Abate was assigned to the Marine Cryptologic Support Battalion, which supports the National Security Agency. One of the largest U.S. intelligence agencies, the NSA spies on electronic communications around the world and has a critical role in deterring cyberattacks and foreign influence operations. A spokesperson for the NSA declined to answer questions about when the agency learned of Abate’s statement that he had entered the Capitol or if it took action prior to his arrest to restrict his access to classified information.
