Texas teacher fired after lesson was laden with offensive language, including a racial slur [1]

A teacher who taught at Rancier Middle School in Killeen, Texas gave an assignment to students within an “inclusion type program”. The assignment, which included a word search, a word scramble, and a colour by word, dealt with “trigger words”. The “trigger words” pertained to offensive language, including racial slurs.

The Killeen Independent School District (KISD) became notified of the assignment last Wednesday, and they immediately launched an investigation. The next day, Dr John Craft, superintendent for KISD, wrote a letter to parents of students attending Rancier Middle School. Craft acknowledged that the “trigger word” assignment “escalated [...] in the wrong direction”. The teacher who made the assignment is now fired.
