The British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has been on a tour of the country promoting his “levelling up” funding. This will literally build a second Eden in the coastal town of Morecambe and establish a rail link between Cardiff Central railway station and Cardiff Bay, among other projects. The largesse is in part due to the money from recent new leases for offshore wind farms.
As part of the media blitz he uploaded this video to Instagram. It shows him committing a “road traffic offence” and ought to receive an on-the-spot fine (trafffic ticket) of £100 or, if he takes it to court a possible fine of £500 and a three point endorsement on his driving licence. (The Tories fairly recently added the points penalty.) Can you spot what he did? The thumbnail is enough so you don't have to play it.

Yep — no seat belt. The police are reported to be investigating and Sunak has apologised for “an error of judgement”.
A spokesperson for Lancashire constabulary said on Thursday evening they were aware of matter and were making inquiries. According to his government’s own safety campaign, any driver or passenger not wearing a seatbelt is breaking the law and is liable to be fined up to £500. Downing Street said the prime minister has apologised for what it characterised as a “brief error of judgment” by removing his seatbelt to film the social media video message while a passenger in the back seat of a car. A spokesperson for No 10 said: “That was a brief error of judgment. The prime minister removed his seatbelt to film a short clip.” Sunak “fully accepts this was a mistake and apologises”, the spokesperson said, adding: “The prime minister believes everyone should wear a seatbelt. It was an error of judgment; he removed it for a short period of time to film a clip, which you’ve seen, but he accepts that was a mistake.”
You might think a second error was an aide or the driver reminding him about his seat belt, I couldn’t possibly comment. I suppose he could always try the Boris Johnson “I did not realise the roomfull of people with wine and snacks was a party” excuse. Perhaps he thought the car was not moving because the ride was so soft.
