Such a warm and compassionate visage.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, has resigned. The youngest female ever elected as head of government, at age 37, she led her country through a series of fierce challenges, from the Christchurch mosque shootings and White Island volcanic eruption to the Covid Pandemic.

The NYT offers further details here, as well as The Guardian, so I don’t have more to add to her history, but her cheery disposition, along with her decisive actions during her nation’s crises, left me with the impression of a world leader any nation would be fortunate to have.

I remember, in particular, the occasion during some of the darkest hours of the Covid outbreak, when she reassured the Children of New Zealand that the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy were considered Essential Workers and would be permitted to perform their customary duties.

Comparing that to our own leader’s behavior during the same period makes me shed a tear for the Kiwis’ loss… She is a truly remarkable human being.
