It’s the Economy Stupid
With those words James Carville defined the 1992 election between Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush. It was an observation made based on previous elections where an incumbent lost. Other issues existed, they always do, but in 1980, when Carter lost, inflation and unemployment were both high. In 1932 when Hoover lost, it was the height of the Great Depression. These were the only two Twentieth Century incumbents to lose their re-election bid prior to 1992. In 1992 Gross Domestic product was erratic, jobs were being lost permanently, unemployment was rising. Carville knew what to campaign on.
Carville knew it was the economy that defeats incumbents. 40% of people who voted in 1992 cited the economy as their number one concern. Carville was correct in 1992, and if he said the same thing in 2024, he’d be right again.
Therefore, Republicans are eager to destroy the economy. They know to defeat Biden in 2024 the economy must be in shambles.
Kevin McCarthy recently struck a deal with the Freedom Caucus. The Freedom Caucus, a minority of Republicans who favor anarchy and religious doctrine over Constitutional and Democratic forms of government, were willing to vote for McCarthy, if he committed to destroy the United States economy.
When elected by the American people, legislators do more than promise to abide by our Constitution. They promise to serve the needs of “We the People.” Kevin McCarthy is going to have to break one of his commitments. He will either disappoint the “Freedom Caucus,” or he has to renege on his promise to “We the People.”
And let’s be real, outside of Daily Kos readers, much of America is not well informed enough to understand this.
At stake is more than the speakership of the house. At stake is the economy of the United States of America and quite possibly the world. Will we invite a dictator back into the White House, who ignores Global Warming, will we move the nation and perhaps the world into another Great Depression: Or will “We the People” be vigilant in defending our economy, our Democracy, our heritage.
It all depends on the selfishness of one man, Kevin McCarthy, and our ability to educate the uninformed who flock to the Freedom Caucus. Kevin McCarthy might be the most powerful speaker in history, while being the weakest person to ever hold the gavel.
