$858Billion Pentagon Budget Needs to be Cut [1]

This weekend, we celebrated and honored Martin Luther King Jr’s work for liberation.

He famously said: “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplit is approaching spiritual death.” Our nation has done just that.

Last year I was one of the few members of Congress to vote against the $858 billion so-called defense budget, the largest ever in the history of our country. How can we justify this spending—$45 billion more than President Biden even requested—when our neighbors are struggling to put food on the table, fighting to keep a roof over their heads, and rationing their medication?

Now, Republicans in the House want to cut important social services.

Republicans are calling to cut government spending, but they keep rubber-stamping trillions for the Pentagon while cutting billionaires’ taxes. Instead, they want to cut the social programs our communities depend on, which we instead need to expand.

It’s outrageous that every year, we spend more on our military, weapons, and war than the next nine countries combined. All while there are at least 40 million people across our country living in poverty.

I was sent to Congress to fight to enact policies that would make a meaningful difference in our residents’ lives. Since I’ve been in Congress our military spending keeps going up, while essential programs like the expanded Child Tax Credit have ended.
