Last night brillig wrote a diary about some of her teachers who had a lasting impact on her. Tonight, I am going to write about interesting and fun stories about some of the teachers I had growing up. Whether or not these teachers had a significant impact on my future, the stories I am about to tell are ones I have told numerous times to numerous people. We will go in chronological order.
My 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Raskin, was the one teacher I had who was most like my mom. She told the most awful jokes much like my mom does. Because of that, I would constantly laugh at them. This please her to no end because I was regularly the only kid in class who either understood them or found them funny. To his day, whenever I see her around town, she never forgets to tell me about this.
My 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Lieberman, was color-blind. Yep, a rare female with color-blindness. Her best friend, Mrs. Adler was also a 6th grade teacher in our school. From what I remember, Mrs. Adler would regularly help Mrs. Lieberman pick the clothes she would wear when teaching. Every year our school would hold Color Day in which each grade would be given a color and compete in various categories like best classroom decorations or most articles of clothing worn by the class in their color. When it came time to pick the colors for each class, I was chosen to pick the color for our class. Being the pessimist I am, I thought Mrs. Adler might try to sabotage Mrs. Lieberman on Color Day. In one of the rare lucky moments for me, I pulled white out the box. Yay me!
Growing up, there was one kid in my grade who was a true terror and was the one person with whom I almost got into a physical altercation. In 7th grade, our math teacher, Mrs. Fernando, finally had enough of his antics. One day he went to the bathroom, and she decided the entire class would move into the music room across the hall while he was out of the room. Unfortunately for us, the girls in the class liked to wear Mrs. Fernando’s high heeled shoes. The girl wearing them that day took forever to walk the 10 feet to the music room and he caught us. So close to him getting his comeuppance.
For 10th grade modern European History, I had Mrs. Sordellini. She was so much fun. She would have us do talk shows and skits as part of learning history. We did lots of group projects as well. Part of the class was done in conjunction with our English class especially when the two teachers organized a class trip to see Les Miserables on Broadway. What I remember most about her is every time someone had their 16th birthday, she breakout into song sing The Crests version of “16 Candles.”
For 11th grade US History, I had Dr. Lagana. Dr. Lagana must have visited every single presidential home in the US because he would tell us all about the personal lives of our presidents as we got to them in the year. I remember learning that the biggest room at Mt. Vernon was the ballroom because George Washington liked to host parties and was an avid dancer. He also told us how Theodore Roosevelt had memorized every book in his home at Sagamore Hill and could recite verbatim what followed anything you quoted from one of the books. After seeing how many books were in the house, I was very amazed. One other great thing about having him for US History is he always organized an overnight trip to Washington D.C. for his classes. That was my second school trip to DC after the traditional 8th grade trip my middle school always has.
Also in 11th grade, I had Mr. Zunno for AP Bio. This story doesn’t involve me but it has a connection to a previous story. There were two AP Bio classes. I took the morning class while the terror student mentioned in the 7th grade story had the afternoon class. I usually hung out in Mr. Zunno’s classroom before classes started since his room wasn’t far from my first class and we liked each other. He knew me and the terror kid did not get along, so one morning, he told a story about something he did to the kid. Funnily, it was the exact same thing Mrs. Fernando attempted to do back in 7th grade. One day, the terror went to the bathroom and Mr. Zunno decided to have everyone move to the classroom next door and shut off the lights in his room. Apparently the kid spent a few minutes going up and down the hall knocking on doors looking for his class. Needless to say, I found this hilarious. After I told Mr. Zunno we attempted to do this to him back in 7th grade, he felt bad. I told him not to feel bad as the kid deserved it.
I hope you enjoyed this little trip down memory lane for me. If you have any fun stories to share, feel free to do so in the comments.
