We talked about one strategy for getting through the winter, by slowing down and burning a lot less energy. Sounds good if you can manage it.
A different approach to winter is to store up plenty of food while it is abundant, in the fall, somewhere you will be able to access it during the lean times.
I’m partial to that method myself. Freeze, can, dry, cool storeroom.
Squirrels and chipmunks are famous for doing this. Some squirrel stashes are buried in random spots that the squirrel expects to remember and retrieve, but that doesn’t always happen. That’s how trees get planted.
Some species of mice store seeds in their burrows.
Bees make honey enough to see them through the cold weather.
Pikas actually make hay. They cut mouthfuls of green grass and leafy plants, spread them on sunny rocks to dry thoroughly, then store them in the burrow.
PWBPeeps is a group that posts a daily diary and nightly open thread for animal lovers. We share photos, seek & give advice about pet health and behavior issues, support each other in times of sadness and stress, celebrate together when times are good, and on most days have an inordinate amount of fun.
You are welcome to join us!
Here are few not-too-onerous PWB rules
