Anyway, that’s not what the diary’s about. Or maybe it is, and all this is just filler! It is certainly quite random — now and then, I build up a collection of YouTubes that are individually not a diary, and need to do something with them. Here is the current such collection.
You obviously need a snack to sit through all this stuff, so here is Glen making some crab dip that is not like all the other crab dip. [7:15]
The PoliticsGirl channel has whole long podcasts with guests like Karine Jean-Pierre and Marc Elias, but there are also these short rants she tapes in her kitchen. This is a very clear account, I think, of what the debt ceiling is, and the reason it’s a perpetual problem. [7:14]
Somehow, a discussion in New Day Cafe Sunday morning about the breakfast menu at a fancy resort in 1920 took a turn — well, I should not say “somehow”. Obviously, The Marti was there, and a remark about “lamb hash” turned into a thing about sheep on drugs. I posted this video, in which the innocent sheep is not at all on drugs, and then twingrace came by later and made a serious and very interesting observation about biblical language in the KJV. Sometimes, you learn something in spite of your best intentions. [2:32]
To transition us away from consideration of the Psalms, here is pianist Jonny May taking commenter requests for Christmas songs that should NEVER be played in ragtime, and then, you know… [3:05]
This is a silent time-lapse of US weather radar for all of 2022, compressed into less than five minutes. Certainly there have been showier years with lots of fancy hurricanes, but less showy is just fine, thank you. The date and time (UTC) are in the lower left. [4:54]
This is a little long, but interesting, I thought. The Rosetta Stone’s curator at the British Museum tells us a) WHY it’s written in three languages and b) what it actually says that was thought to be worth carving in stone three ways. [16:34]
You probably have to have seen Star Wars a lot of times ::raises hand:: to appreciate the shot-for-shot detail of this, but it’s the scenes following the capture of the Millennium Falcon by the Death Star, except set on Earth in the 1880s. (Chewbacca is a pug.) Steampunk fans will probably enjoy this. [Compare] [3:25]
For those who prefer real space adventures, Anton Petrov provides a beautiful montage of images from the JWST in 2022. No spoken commentary is offered, but the images are captioned, and some have helpful labels. (If you’d like to hear him discuss the images, that video is here.) [11:14]
