Greene, Gosar get choice assignments to House Oversight (Conspiracy Theory) Committee [1]

Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Paul Gosar have not only been reinstated to House committees, but will both serve on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, which will soon set about investigating every conspiracy theory related to the Biden administration.

CNN reported that the House GOP Steering Committee, which decides committee assignments, voted unanimously Tuesday to assign Greene and Gosar to the Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. James Comer of Kentucky.

Greene, whose anti-Ukraine comments have often been quoted by Vladimir Putin’s TV propagandists, has also been assigned a seat on the Homeland Security Committee.

NBC News reported that Republicans on the Homeland Security Committee will use their position to “focus on border security and to investigate Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Last week, a House Republican from Texas filed articles of impeachment against Mayorkas.

Gosar will get back the seat he previously held on the Natural Resources Committee.

Greene put out a statement that she felt “honored” to be selected to serve on the House Oversight Committee. And in an ominous sign of things to come, she said:

“Joe Biden, be prepared. We are going to uncover every corrupt business dealing, every foreign entanglement, every abuse of power, and every check cut for The Big Guy. “And it’s not just the Biden Crime Family, the GOP majority will investigate every bit of government being used to abuse the American people.”

It’s been nearly two years since Greene and Gosar were both stripped of their committee assignment when the House was under Democratic control.

In February 2021, the House voted to remove Greene from her committee assignments for repeatedly making incendiary statements before being elected to Congress indicating support for executing prominent Democratic politicians.

The House voted to censure Gosar and remove him from his committees in November 2021 after he posted a photo-shopped anime video to social media showing him appearing to kill Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and attacking President Joe Biden.

Greene supported Kevin McCarthy’s bid for House Speaker on all 15 ballots and had lobbied for a seat on the Oversight Committee where she can showboat during hearings. Gosar finally ended his holdout and switched to supporting McCarthy on the final ballot.

The committee assignments were clearly part of the price McCarthy had to pay to the House Freedom Caucus nihilists to finally get the Speaker’s gavel.

In the end the Department of Justice might have to exercise some oversight over the Oversight Committee given all the insurrectionists named to it. CNN, citing Republican sources, reported thast the GOP Steering Committee also assigned Reps. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania and Lauren Boebert of Colorado to the committee.

Perry and Boebert had consistently voted against McCarthy, but on the final ballot Perry supported the California congressman and Boebert voted “present.”

CNN reported that the committee rosters will still have to be ratified next week by the entire House GOP caucus, but that’s pretty much a formality given that members of the steering committee are closely tied with the House GOP leadership.

Barring the unexpected, serial liar Rep. George Santos will be able to put on his resume something that’s true — since he was named to the House Small Business Committee and the House Science, Space and Technology Committee.

Meanwhile, McCarthy has threatened to remove Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell, both from California, from the House Intelligence Committee, and Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
