Reconstruction: Arkansas Militia 1862 - 1874 [1]

The Arkansas Militia in Reconstruction of 1862-1874 were involved in the ongoing civil disturbances plagued the state until 1870. This militia was the first black soldiers utilized by the white population to re-established control over the newly freed black population.

The Radical Republicans seized control in 1867 and abolished existing state government, militia organization, and disenfranchised former Confederates (mostly black soldier with white officers). This created and utilized this new “Black Militia”.

The following next year of 1868. As well of secret society in the South called KU KLUX KLAN appeared in Arkansas to disrupt elections and prevent freed blacks from voting.

A Union General of the Civil War named John Powell Clayton. John Powell Clayton (1868-1871) became the 9th governor of Arkansas. He was a prominent role as Republican in Reconstruction “Radical Republicans”. Governor Clayton started the first free public schools. At the 1868 Presidential Election. Republicans members led by the KU KLUX KLAN (KKK) who aimed for African Americans assassinated a Republican Congressman, and Gov. Clayton survived an attempted on life.

In 1872 was a general election for governor. The candidate nominees were Joseph Brooks and Elisha Baxter. Joseph Brooks was an old Radical Republican and Elisha Baxter was a Liberal. Elisha Baxter won the governor general election, but a judge ruled Joseph Brooks won governor on April 12, 1874 overthrowing Elisha Baxter governor position. Joseph Brooks and Elisha Baxter went to war. Joseph Brooks had 2000 riflemen and Elisha Baxter had 1300 militia troops. Brooks riflemen, 9 killed and 30 wounded on May 1,1874 and Elisha Baxter had 200 casualties. On May 15, 1874 it was officially announce Elisha Baxter was the governor and Joseph Brooks wasn’t.

These are facts of Arkansas history which needs to be told.
