On Christmas Eve, President Biden posted some lovely Holiday photos of the White House tree and other seasonal decorations, (shared in this story by AKALib). Certainly a vast improvement over the former guy and wife’s efforts, generously described as “unconventionally traditional,” by the ever discrete NPR.

But one of the Biden’s pictures leaped out at this Boomer:

I recently attended my 50th college reunion. A couple of my doctor classmates gave a seminar, “Healthy Survival after 70.” Here was Rule No. 1:

DO NOT FALL

There are many ways you can fall just going about your business every day. But there are few easy tips — avoid walking on ice, don’t run for a bus or train, avoid shag rugs, make sure your house has good lighting, hold onto bannisters, be careful walking dogs, and of course, don’t play tackle football or join the UFC. Tai chi or other balance/strength training may help on the prevention side.

Another obvious one:

DON’T CLIMB ON A LADDER

Don’t take my word for it. Here’s what a group of ICU doctors wrote in Danger at every rung: Epidemiology and outcomes of ICU-admitted ladder-related trauma:

The incidence of ladder falls requiring ICU management is increasing, and severe traumatic brain injury was responsible for the majority of deaths and for poor outcomes in survivors. In-hospital costs attributable to the care of these patients are high, and fewer than half were living independently at home at 12 months post-fall. A concerted public health campaign is required to alert the community to the potential consequences of this mechanism of injury.

“Tree-pruning” is among the most common activities leading to ladder falls. I submit “tree decorating” has the same risk.

I get it. Nobody wants to feel like a wimp or a geezer. But that “cost” is dwarfed by the “benefit” of staying alive or mobile. In most cases, you can find someone younger to do it. (A neighbor, the apartment superintendent, your kids or grandkids.) If it’s an emergency and you have no other choice, wear a damn helmet, as the linked article above recommends if there is no other choice.

So in this one important way, don’t be like Joe.

In fact, Joe should not be like Joe.

As my classmate advised at the reunion: “You’ve climbed your last ladder.”
