Freddie let out a loud meow! startling me. My hand to my chest, I looked back at him. “What?” I asked.
“I want to lie down,” he said, looking meaningfully at the laptop again.
“You’re just going to have to wait,” I said. I touched the blanket on which he sat. “You can sleep on the furry blanket until I’m ready for you.”
He gave me another sharp meow! and I laughed. “You sure are vocal tonight.”
“I have a lot to say,” he agreed.
That gave me an idea. “What other sounds can you make?” I asked, typing away on my computer.
He gave a sad little whine and I rolled my eyes. “I’m just doing a little work. You’ll have full access to my lap in like fifteen minutes.”
“That was a sound I can make,” he said.
I glanced quickly at him and then back to my screen. “Oh, right. What did it mean?”
“That I need a treat.”
I snorted, but reached for the bag.
“That’s another sound,” Freddie said, carefully picking up a treat from the small pile I made for him on my tv tray.
“Are you talking about the cronch cronch of treats?” I wondered.
He answered by chomping loudly into another one.
When I next looked over at him, he was lying on the furry blanket, paws tucked beneath him. He was in full loaf mode.
And purring quite loud.
“That’s my favorite noise, I think,” I told him.
He opened his mouth and the purr got very loud. I grinned at him.
“Any others?” I asked.
He gave a friendly little chirp.
I nodded. That’s a good one too. It’s very welcoming.
“It’s for when I’m welcoming myself onto your lap or bed,” he explained.
I sneezed twice into the crook of my arm. “Oh, excuse me,” I said.
Freddie stared intently at me and gave the ack ack ack of a cat who spots a bird on the wrong side of the window.
“Why do you do that when I sneeze?” I asked.
He did it again, still staring hard at my face.
“Are you...are you planning to hunt me?”
“Alright,” I said with a satisfied sigh. “That’s all done and now you can have my lap.” I closed the laptop with a snap and moved it out of his way.
He blinked up at me from his loaf form on the blanket next to me.
“Lap’s all free,” I said, giving my thigh a pat for good measure.
He started to purr.
“you don’t want my lap anymore, do you?”
“I’m pretty comfortable where I am,” he said.
I scratched under his chin and he lifted it to give me access. “You’re a good boy,” I told him.
“That’s my favorite noise you make,” he said.
Happy Caturday, Peeps! Freddie has a whole library of chirps and chatters and while he is not the most vocal cat I’ve ever shared a home with, he does use them when he has something to say.
