Why didn't Democrats raise or eliminate the debt ceiling when they had the opportunity in 2022? [1]

Looking for help on Debt ceiling from Republicans

So Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen announced today that the debt ceiling will be reached next Thursday, January 19, 2023. thehill.com/… In December 2022 Democrats passed a $1.7 trillion funding bill. www.politico.com/…. Why didn’t Democrats take the opportunity to at least raise the debt ceiling by an identical $1.7 trillion or even better, just eliminate the debt ceiling once and for all so the country can’t be held hostage by the GOP? Yellen and the treasury must have known we were going to soon hit the debt ceiling. This is political malpractice of the highest order. I’m sick and tired of this political incompetence that only serves to benefit Republicans. How many more times is this going to happen before Democrats wake up and stop making the same stupid mistakes over and over again.
