I’m trying not to jinx it by saying anything, but to this point it has been an incredibly mild winter in Chicago.

Of course, this being Chicago, that’s subject to change at any moment. But for now there’s no snow on the ground and hasn’t been for some time a couple of weeks). It’s kinda chilly outside but, other than the snowpocalypse that never showed up, it’s been a quiet winter and, dare I say, even a pleasant one.

The other reason that I am saying little or nothing is because of major and even fatal weather events in other parts of country; particularly this past week in California.

I noticed that Mom called while I went to buy a few things for a quick dinner earlier tonight. I know that if I returned the call, I would have never gotten this written.

Count my Mom among the many many many older black people that keeps the TV on MSNBC. When I was younger, though, Mom barely even watched the news but since November 8, 2016, that’s pretty much all that she does when she’s at home. Well, that and playing various games on her computer. In fact, since I now that my mother loves word games (after all, she is the Scrabble Queen!) I taught her how to play Wordle and now we have discussions about the day’s Wordle that last up to ½ hour to 45 minutes.

But I digress.

Mom watches all this news and even before I got this job at Daily Kos, I knew to expect a call from her asking questions about what Number 45 has done most recently. I answer her questions to the best of my ability. Every once in awhile, she’ll start to spin something that sounds like a conspiracy theory and then I have to stop her before she takes the both of us off of the CT cliff. And I mean...we talk.

I’ve been known to complain about our talks from time to time or the just feel like I am simply a news wire service to my Mom but the truth?

Throughout my 20’s, Mom and I didn’t have much to talk about at all and it only took about five minutes on the phone with her in order for the arguments to start. Truth be told, we still do “go at it” but those occasions are exceedingly rare. Now…if I’m only a trusted news wire and news analysis service to her, so be it; it’s not as if she doesn’t employ by brother and at least two of her grandkids in similar ways (my brother, for example, provide her free Uber service).

Truth is that it’s a joy to grow older with Mom.

It’s a joy to learn more about her now that she feels that I am adult enough that she can disclose some things about herself as a teenager and a young mother. She was 20 years old when she gave birth to me. And then I think of myself when I was 20 years old. She wasn’t all that different.

So tonight I’m doing housework. Tomorrow morning, I have to go down to the LGBT center on Halsted for a volunteer orientation, so I’m making a little bit of an early night of ir.
