This story seems to have gone under the radar:
www.politico.eu/…
There seems to be a lot of confusion about who might supply what tanks and when and with who’s permission. This is also clouded by the upcoming Polish elections, which means the Polish Government is doing what it can to blame Germany.
So who said what:
Habeck on Thursday: “And accordingly, Germany should not stand in the way when other countries make decisions to support Ukraine, regardless of what decision Germany makes.”
Habeck is vice chancellor, “who also oversees arms export controls as economy minister”. He is also head of the Greens and the most popular politician in Germany. If Scholz (who is not so popular) wants to block the onward export of Leopard tanks, he will now have to actively contradict his Number 2.
Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Wednesday that a Polish “company of Leopard tanks for Ukraine will be transferred as part of international coalition building,” adding that “such a decision is already [taken] in Poland.” However, Poland has not formally asked Germany for permission to forward export the tanks. It appears so far they are saying “we have decided to supply Ukraine, but the Germans haven’t given permission”.
Scholz — and by extension Germany, appears to be unhappy about being forced to help to Ukraine. The end result is that Germany does supply the goods, but gets blamed for not supplying them or being too slow. He seems to be held back by his “Pacifist” beliefs, and missing a political opportunity.
Hopefully this “accidental miscommunication” can be put aside and some tanks can be on the way soon.
