Hillary Clinton founded ISIS.
I’m under audit, so I can’t let you see my tax returns.
I’m a self-made billionaire.
I’m not a politician.
Women lack the stamina needed to do well in high-level jobs.
Climate change is a hoax.
Mexico will pay for a wall it doesn’t want.
As you may recall, those aren’t some of George Santos’s recent whoppers. They were among Donald Trump’s in 2016.
Here’s the thing. Fairy tales enabled Santos to galumph into the House’s backbenches. There, he has drawn no small flak. But six years ago, when it became clear such truth-flouting had fueled Big Blonder’s ride to power, few made bold to call on him to resign (or recant). In the Oval Office, he went right on telling tales even taller than the 6’3” he falsely claimed for himself.
In 2018, his weekly fib tally surpassed 100. For the most part, Big Media legitimized, normalized, winked, and shrugged it off. (For his part, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer pirouetted around Trump’s absurdity by reporting the President had been “dancing around the truth.” Go figure.)
Like The Donald, Santos was born with a forked tongue in his mouth. But Trump’s is pure platinum- and has only grown sharper with use.
Not for naught did George Mason point out that the people must hold the President, of all people, to account. Granted, in the political arena, almost everyone lies. At least, a bit. But in 2020, Trump got to a point where he was averaging as much deceit per day as President Barack Obama had totaled in EIGHT FULL YEARS.
How’s that for a “credibility gap” (if someone might care to help me revive that term)?
In all, when such wet noodle wielders as Blitzer pass for ‘tough on Trump,’ we’re in the soup. And when Dems exhaust no small portion of their umbrage on so small a fish as Santos, we can expect to keep floundering.
