Here we go again.
A prominent right winger (Diamond of Diamond and Silk) has died and the inevitable cycle begins:
Posts appear, many are “less than sad” about her death. A backlash ensues and the right uses No. 1 to show how terrible “the libs” are They are joined by “moderate” concern trolls who pounce on those who posted No. 1.
In this case, we have the added question of whether she died of COVID, because of the irony of a COVID and vaccine skeptic dying of the disease. (The “Herman Cain Awards” genre.) Well, I don’t give a s&*t if she did or didn’t.
Here’s how I feel:
I don’t celebrate her death. I don’t care what she died of. But her death provides an opportunity to mourn those who died because of her lies and
show how damaging those lies are.
When Rush Limbaugh died in 2021, the usual hand-wringers like Frank Bruni asked Must We Dance on Rush Limbaugh’s Grave? My response was “I’m not dancing on his grave. I’m mourning those who died from his lies,” like claiming “staged overrunning of hospitals” and invective like calling us “mask-wearing freaks.”
Rush killed a lot of people.
Diamond is no different.
In April 2020, when tens of thousands of my neighbors in New York were dying, Diamond and Silk “questioned the death toll. They’ve questioned whether the virus is being “deliberately spread.” They’ve suggested the “Deep State” is working “behind the scenes” and that it is “engineered.”
Many who believed them infected many who never heard of them.
Those lies were stricken from Twitter (though not today, amirite Elmo!) and even got them kicked off Fox
Diamond was a committed anti-vaxxer, using her public persona to discourage people from getting vaccinated.
She was on the same side as those who spread vaccine hate when, e.g., Grant Wahl died and Damar Hamlin collapsed, compelling Grant Wahl's Widow, an Epidemiologist, to Fight Back in the NYT Against Vicious COVID Lies.
I guess it would be ironic if she died of COVID, but irony is beside the point.
Like Rush, she had blood on her hands, and her living sister still does.
