This man doesn’t disclose his full name — his YouTube channel is called Burls Art, and so is his Instagram and so is his Facebook, and also too, so is his website. His buddy in the “guitar in the forest” video below refers to him as “Burl”, so either that’s his name or that’s his nom de guitare. Here’s an article in Guitar World about his newspaper guitar, which is the last video in this diary. They don’t know his name either.
That’s fine; we don’t need to know his name to appreciate his art. I think maybe I’ve shown one of his three colored-pencil guitars in some earlier diary of miscellany, but this video below is his first guitar, as in, he’d never built any guitar before, just played them.
He looks like he’d built other stuff before, and given this a lot of thought, but you can see over the course of these videos that he grows in his expertise and also in the equipment he has available. (These aren’t in chronological order throughout.)
At the end of each video, he plays the new guitar a little so you can hear how it sounds. The audio on the build narration improves in later videos, but the guitar sound is always good. They all run longer than our average video. And I’m not close to including them all here. [9:25]
Bass made of Lego. [14:15]
Three-string guitar made from an old shovel. [8:17]
Guitar made from skateboards. [11:40]
Guitar made from coffee beans. [11:49]
Guitar made from a 50-pound block of pink Himalayan rock salt. (Guy in the comments: “I swear to god there is gonna be a day that this guy makes a guitar out of pocket lint, a gumball and a quarter lol.”*) [10:04]
[* link: this guy makes a guitar out of gumballs - no lint or coins involved]
This one is a little different, and that’s saying something when the previous one was Himalayan salt. He hikes out into the woods somewhere, collects some wood from fallen trees, and builds a guitar on the spot, entirely using hand tools. [20:32]
Guitar made from recovered ocean plastic. This project is meant to highlight the organization 4ocean, a Public Benefit Corporation that removes plastic and other trash from the ocean on a large scale. See their website here for more information on their work. [15:22]
Finally, the most recent video: a guitar made of newspaper. [12:49]
