On the evening of January 6, Svatove area of Ukraine has experienced a cold snap. Today, on January 10, according to local accounts (see link above) the ground is frozen. It has taken about 4 days — even faster than I thought initially (my guess was 5 days).

The speed of ground freezing is not surprising. In World War 2 during battle of Moscow, the ground froze in three days after the cold snap hit but in 1941 it got really cold really fast. Fun fact... as soon as night frost hit in very early November 1941, the Germans were able to run their logistics at night but could not during the day — that is how fast the mud can congeal (but not quite freeze) in Russia.

So anyhow, we can now expect heavy duty activity soon, emphasis on heavy.
