After losing the recent Brazilian presidential election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Jair Bolsonaro has left Brazil. Refusing to partake in the handover of power to Lula, he came to Florida. It has been speculated that Bolsonaro left Brazil due to the fact that he is under investigation in several criminal probes.
The four criminal probes already underway before Bolsonaro's election loss include allegations he leaned on the federal police to protect his sons, spread known electoral falsehoods, and harbored a troll farm peddling disinformation from within his presidential office. All four are led by Moraes, who has been derided by Bolsonaro's supporters as an unelected despot censoring free speech. A separate Moraes-led investigation into violent protests by election deniers has already yielded several arrests.
Bolsonaro now lives a lofty lifestyle at a summer home inside the Encore Resort at Reunion, located in proximity to Walt Disney World. He has lived the American life, eating at KFC and shopping at Publix.

Many Brazilians in Florida still treat him like a celebrity, if not like a deity.
“My kids, they didn’t want to see Mickey Mouse, they wanted to see Bolsonaro,” Leandro Neiva, a Brazilian dentist said as he, his wife and their two young children waited to greet Bolsonaro on Friday. “He is just like us. He could be at Mar-a-Lago with Trump, but he is here in Orlando, and everybody knows he is here.”

It should not come as a surprise, as 81 per cent of overseas voters in Miami wanted four more years of Bolsonaro.

In fact, in recent years, Florida has become a kind of Valhalla for right-wingers not just in the USA or Latin America, but the world. It doesn’t hurt that Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort is in Palm Beach. And right-wingers do salivate over Ron DeSantis’s landslide victory after pushing policies that include opposition to COVID mandates and a ban on “woke” curricula.

As for Bolsonaro himself, he is currently in hospital, as of this writing. He is being treated for abdominal pain at AdventHealth Celebration.

It is not known how long Bolsonaro will be a “Florida Man”; extradition has not been officially ruled out.
