The scene outside a Newport News elementary school after a student shot a teacher
The minute news broke that a six-year-old boy in Newport News, Virginia had shot his teacher, my first thought was that any adult or adults who owned that gun needed to be in prison for a long time. Given the circumstances, I hoped that we would find out how a gun managed to get into the hands of a child.
Well, some answers came late Monday. It turns out that the gun was registered to the mother of the six-year-old who wielded it at Richwood Elementary School.
The gun allegedly used by a 6-year-old boy to shoot his teacher at a Newport News, Virginia, school was legally purchased by the child’s mother, officials said. The boy took the firearm from his home to school in his backpack Friday, Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew said Monday.
Drew added that police have been in contact with the Newport News commonwealth’s attorney (as district attorneys are called in Virginia) “to help us best get services to this young man.” His department will provide all information gleaned from interviews to prosecutors so they can weigh whether charges will be filed.
You don’t need any legal training to know that any debate ought to be a quick one. The parents of that kid—and the title “parents” ought to be used very loosely—are on the same level as the “parents” of Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley. By all rights, they belong in prison for as long as legally possible.
