The first satellite launch to orbit from the UK has just taken off. Branson’s converted Boeing 747 will carry the launch rocket out over the Atlantic from where it will be fired into orbit. Take-off is from Spaceport Cornwall in the West of England. More launch sites for more coventional ground fired rockets are due to open this year.
The UK had a rocket program during the cold war but then went with the US Polaris nuclear rocket deterrent. More recently the aerospace industry has concentrated on satellite design and production. This launch will carry a number of micro-satellites.
