Good morning, Crew.

Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum. I’ve come to think of this post as one where you come for the music and stay for the conversation—so feel free to drop a note. The diarist gets to sleep in if she so desires and can show up long after the post is published. So you know, it's a feature, not a bug.

I know the Sunday Morning Open Thread began as a site where we could join to listen to less well known but I love these guys. Any one of them has the chops to try and steal the light from the rest. Instead they seem to be just having fun together.

The Traveling Wilburys was the brainchild of Beatles guitarist George Harrison. He first mentioned the idea to singer, songwriter, producer and ELO frontman Jeff Lynne. Lynne supported the idea. When the two of them were throwing around names who each wanted to work with Harrison chose Bob Dylan, Lynne chose Roy Orbison. Harrison was later talking with rocker Tom Petty about their mutual enthusiasm for ‘50s rockabilly tunes. Petty was also invited to join. With that, they had a band.

The name of Harrison’s supergroup came from a recording session with Harrison and Lynne. The recording equipment kept giving them mistakes. Harrison said jokingly, “We’’ll bury ‘em in the mix.” For the rest of the session, any mistake was called a Trembling Wilbury. The name was later changed to the Traveling Wilburys.
