Use natural gas, for cooking, or, in a rocket powered car.

Okay, here we go again.

Feel free to look at the headlines in this link, and post, in your comment, any headline that I skipped:

en.wikipedia.org/...

Also, feel free to add your commentary, on the history that was unfolding, at that time.

At least 10,000 dead?

The natural disasters had a high body count, in 1970.

March 15 – The Expo '70 World's Fair opens in Suita, Osaka, Japan.

I found myself asking myself, do we still do World’s Fairs?

en.wikipedia.org/…

Looking at the list at that link, I could see, that they were popular, starting in the 1860’s, and stayed popular, through the 1930’s, when there were more than 40 of them. After WW II, they cut way back, with only 4, in the 1970’s, and 4 or 5, in each decade since then. We may have four or five, in the 2020’s.

April 13 – An oxygen tank in the Apollo 13 spacecraft explodes, forcing the crew to abort the mission and return in four days.

Lucky 13. Did you see the movie?

You can read more about that here:

en.wikipedia.org/…

Truly disturbing, the whole incident.

May 14 — In the second day of violent demonstrations at Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi, state law enforcement officers fire into the demonstrators, killing 2 and injuring 12.

Again? More?

Nice diversion.

The natural disasters, had a high body count, in 1970.

Space race.

July 12 – Thor Heyerdahl's papyrus boat Ra II arrives in Barbados.

The diversion arrives, across the ocean.

This was a very big deal, in Egypt.

Aircraft getting hijacked, with this kind of goal, made folks think, on September 11, 2001, that the hijackers would divert to some place they wanted to go, and landed, safely. Like they did in 1970, and many other times.

I live in Wichita, Kansas, home of Wichita State University. Along 21st Street, just east of Hillside, is the old football stadium, which has been empty, unused, since 1970. They may just tear it down, eventually. Wichita State is big on basketball. No football team.

But, these are those nice, gentle, Canadians. They would not kill anyone. Right?

October 12 – Vietnam War: U.S. President Richard Nixon announces that the United States will withdraw 40,000 more troops before Christmas.

Was Nixon responding to the Kent State protests?

Well, so much for nice, gentle, Canadians.

October 23 – Gary Gabelich sets a land speed record in a rocket-powered automobile called the Blue Flame, fueled with natural gas.

Nice diversion, and a nice ad for the natural gas industry. (See the picture, at the top.)

Folks were building submarines, in the 1860’s. But, as I understand, it ended up a suicide mission. The submariners sunk the regular ship, and they died, as well.

The Blue Flame, even faster.

October 30 – In Vietnam, the worst monsoon to hit the area in six years causes large floods, kills 293, leaves 200,000 homeless and virtually halts the Vietnam War.

Okay, we gotta take a break from this war, and let the monsoon rack up a high body count.

500,000 dead.

I live in Wichita, Kansas. the whole city, including the surrounding Sedgwick County, has about 500,000 people in it.

I was raised with 3 older sisters. They already acted quite liberated, before 1970. But, I see the need for the activism. Step aside Bob Hope. The women need to make a statement.

That crazy liberal, Richard Nixon, established that agency, with an executive order.

That crazy liberal, Richard Nixon, signed that bill into law.

I guess Paul said, “Beatles? Been there. Done that. Moving on.”

Okay, I will do like last week, type out every single song and artist, in the top Billboard top 100 from 1970. That way, those I skip, you can look up the song, on YouTube, and post it, if you like. Also, if you find something not on the list, of course.

Number 100:

Call Me, by Aretha Franklin

Number 99:

Powerful, and sad, ballad.

Number 98:

Such classic blues.

Number 97:

Classic hippie peace and love song. Words of wisdom, for sure.

Number 96:

Okay, I knew the part of the song, that has the title, as the lyrics. But, after one minute into this, I am hearing other lyrics, that I do not recall. I will listen, later.

Number 95:

Such a classic. I have not heard that, in a long time.

Number 94:

Deep into hippie land.

Number 93:

Okay, click on that link, and watch that live video. I liked it.

Number 92:

Without Love, by Tom Jones

Number 91:

Psychedelic Shack, by The Temptations

Number 90:

So mellow, so nice. I have not heard that, in so many years. That is why I am doing this series, to find gems, left behind.

Number 89:

I actually do not like this song very much, but, it’s such a standard.

Number 88:

Look at those red outfits!

Number 87:

Pretty good, when it gets to the hook.

Number 86:

This one is, truly, the most pop, of all pop songs. The most basic hook, of all hooks.

Number 85:

Okay, I know this song quite well, but I never knew the title, never knew that word, “vehicle,” was in the lyrics. Now I know.

Number 84:

Somebody’s Been Sleeping, by 100 Proof (Aged in Soul)

Number 83:

I remember it well.

Number 82:

Nice and mellow.

Number 81:

Nice hook.

Number 80:

I know the song, but I never heard this version. It’s nice, lively.

Number 79:

I Want to Take You Higher, by Ike & Tina Turner

Number 78:

Classic hard rock.

Number 77:

For the Love of Him, by Bobbi Martin

Number 76:

I truly like this one. I actually saw The Spinners, live, many decades ago, in Hays, Kansas.

Number 75:

Okay, musically, this sounds so nice, so pretty, so smooth.

But then, I remembered, it’s a sad song. Very sad! Oh well, ignore the sad story.

Number 74:

Why Can’t I Touch You? by Ronnie Dyson

Number 73:

Now, we are getting to the good stuff. The guitar solo, is great.

Number 72:

Grand, and smooth. Classic Elvis.

Number 71:

That one is beautiful.

Number 70:

Okay! Yes. Last week, I kept playing, over and over, Laughing, by this band. This one is even better. No time, indeed.

Number 69:

Yes, yes! What is this, bossa nova? I just know, I love it.

Number 68:

Groovy Situation, by Gene Chandler

Number 67:

This is one of the best songs in pop music. It is brutally sad, but so powerful.

Number 66:

Nice, upbeat, fun song.

Number 65:

Okay, this one makes me cry. I met my first wife, Pam, in 1972. We got married in 1977. Her mother embroidered, on her wheelchair cover, the title of that song. This song is about a wedding, of a young couple. Pam was born disabled, that is why she had a decorated wheelchair. Pam died in 2008.

Number 64:

Nice.

Number 63:

Classic Motown.

Number 62:

Ahhh. This one is uplifting, it cheers me up. Nice.

Number 61:

Absolutely, one of the best, most entertaining songs in all of pop music. But, the title has always confused me. 25 hours? Or 6 to 4, which is, if they mean 6 AM to the following day, at 4 AM, that is 22 hours. So, they should have been singing, “25 or 22.”

Number 60:

I know this song well, but I do not recall this version.

Number 59:

The first one third of this recording session, is dedicated to an introduction. Introduction. Rambling introduction. Oh well.

Number 58:

Still Water (Love), by The Four Tops

Number 57:

Is that called funk?

Number 56:

So much fun! Nice.

Number 55:

I’m Losing You, by Rare Earth

Number 54:

Unusual story line, in the lyrics, but, who cares? Musically, it sounds good.

Number 53:

Classic, fun, summer song.

Number 52:

I like this cartoon video. Fun story, in the lyrics.

Number 51:

Classic Motown sound. Nice.

Number 50:

I do not recall ever hearing this song before, but it’s nice.

Number 49:

I think what I like about this song, is that it is mainly all about the percussion and guitar, especially the percussion, and the singing of the love song, is just added in, to round it out. Nice, fun.

Number 48:

I simply do not know the meaning, the story, told in the lyrics. Maybe I will look it up, some other day.

Number 47:

A light, happy, love song.

Number 46:

Nice, feel good hippie song. By the way, when I was young, and my first wife, Pam only weighed about 100 pounds, I certainly picked her up, and carried her, in many situations. She was born disabled, so, there were many situations, opportunities, to actually pick her up, and carry her. Pam died, in 2008, and my second wife, Tonia, died, in March of 2022. I am getting old. Not planning on any more of that. I know, it’s meant as a metaphor, and I can still help others, in other ways.

Number 45:

This is the first time I actually listened to the lyrics.

Number 44:

A love song, that starts with high notes. Then, goes higher. Why not?

Number 43:

I like the overall sound, the emotional feel, of this song. But, I looked up the lyrics, and, I don’t like those lyrics, much at all. Okay, I will just ignore the lyrics.

Number 42:

So very pretty. But so sad.

Number 41:

The Beatles, with philosophy.

Number 40:

Light and fun. Nice.

Number 39:

Seems like Motown, but, unusual. One of a kind.

Number 38:

Okay, for the first whole minute, I did not recognize this song. Then, it got the the part I remembered. At one and a half minutes, is the hook. Pretty good song. Basic love song.

Number 37:

Truly nice, mellow, mood music.

Number 36:

Up beat, fun, silly song, with nonsense lyrics. Relax, and enjoy it.

Number 35:

This is one of those emotional songs, meant to make folks cry, and it made me cry, just a minute into it. I will listen to the rest later. I seem to recall, it gets even more sad, further into the song.

Number 34:

I never saw this video before. I see Yoko Ono, working on a small crochet project, with her crochet hook. Interesting. Oh, and the song is great, as well.

Number 33:

Great! Fun, upbeat. I love it.

Number 32:

Another great hippie song.

www.google.com/…

"We're callin' everyone to ride along to another shore

We can laugh our lives away and be free once more"

Every day, since my wife died, I am riding along, to another shore. Every day. Today, my other shore, is posting this diary, for all of you. Are we feeling free?

Number 31:

That man is truly one of the very best entertainers, in all of pop music.

Number 30:

Hey, this song gives us truly great instrumentals, for the first one minute and twenty seconds. Then, a little singing, just because we crave a little singing, in the middle of the song. Outstanding.

Number 29:

Nice love song. With lots of trumpets.

Number 28:

Hey! I never saw that video before. The purple hat, makes me think of Prince, and Purple Rain. I was born in 1955. Michael Jackson, and Prince, and my younger brother, were all three born in 1958. So, younger than me. They are all three deceased, at this time.

Number 27:

Such a great hard rock, hippie, love song.

Number 26:

Nice, easy love song.

Number 25:

I do not recall hearing this one before, but it feels like standard Motown.

Number 24:

I do not recall hearing this one before. But it talks about politics, and we are here at Daily Kos, so it fits right in.

Number 23:

Lay Down Candles in the Rain, by Melanie

Number 22:

I truly do not know, if this is a sarcastic gospel song, or a gospel song. Fun music, either way.

Number 21:

I remember hearing the song, but, I certainly never saw this live performance video.

Wow!

Wow, again!

The singing is so precise, no mistakes, and it does not look like a lip sync video.

The outfits are crazy, and fun.

The pretty Black girl, who sings first, makes me think of my wife, Tonia. Who was a pretty Black girl.

Number 20:

Okay, I remember this song, but I presumed it was called, “Do I Dig That Girl.” Not, “Spill the Wine.” Where does that come from, spill what wine?

Okay, I looked it up:

www.google.com/…

Spill the wine, take that pearl

Spill the wine, take that pearl

Spill the wine, take that pearl

Spill the wine, take that pearl

Okay. For all these years, I thought they were singing, “Do I, dig that girl.”

Number 19:

Is that called, serious funk? And, I love those outfits! Great fun.

Number 18:

Such a great, fun, happy love song.

Number 17:

I like the quality, and the style, of Neil Diamond.

Number 16:

Not so great, but, I just had to post, the Jackson 5.

Number 15:

Now, this one has that great hook, that took over the world.

Number 14:

Actual hitch hiking seems way too dangerous. But, sitting in my home, listening to this song, feels good.

Number 13:

This one is so mellow. One of my favorite easy listening songs.

Number 12:

I knew this song, but this time, it made me cry, for the whole song. I like the diversity and inclusion. My first wife, Pam, was born disabled. My second wife, Tonia, was a Black woman, and my sweet nieces, at 5 and 2 years old, who give me hugs, are very mixed. So, the various children, in the video, tugged at my heart strings.

Number 11:

I always like Three Dog Night, and this song is funny, about a young man, who ends up at a wild party, and feels he needs to go home, to his mother.

Number 10:

Standard pop hit.

Number 9:

Beautiful. Very beautiful. I had forgotten how nice this one sounds. Flawless.

Number 8:

A nice Motown song.

Number 7:

Such a nice, pretty, happy love song. And those outfits! Yes!

Number 6:

I enjoyed this live performance. So professional.

Number 5:

Not a wimpy, nicey nicey peace song. A hard, firm, “shove that Vietnam war up your ass,” peace song.

Number 4:

Smooth, easy to listen to. Nice. Was this used, in a movie? Butch Cassidy?

Number 3:

Back in the day, I was baffled, at this song. American woman, stay away? What? Many years later, I learned that the band is from Canada. Oh.

Number 2:

Okay, this song is so silly, so corny, but, it makes me think of Pam, and Tonia. They both put me on a pedestal, as if I am some grand, wonderful guy. So, this song makes me cry, since they both felt that way, about me.

Number 1:

This one seems like it’s trying too hard, to become the ultimate love song, the grandest ever written, the most glorious ever performed.

But it’s so darned good, how can I argue?

Okay, this diary took me way too long to put together. But, there are other folks, here at Daily Kos, who put together other diaries, that are longer, and more detailed, than this one. And, besides, if I ever get my YouTube channel going again, I can go back, and read this Daily Kos effort, on YouTube, and bring more eyes and ears in, to savor the history, and the music.

Hugs!
