SPEAKER DEBACLE-No Honor Among Thieves [1]

Foxes running the henhouse

Allow me to break down what transpired Friday night in the House Chamber of Congress for those who have busy lives. On the 15th ballot Republicans picked their Speaker Kevin McCarthy. There was swearing, crying, fighting and chaos but they got there. What does it mean?

1. Two years ago their was an attempted coup, a plot to overthrow the federal government. There were members of Congress who participated in the plot directly. They are now members of a Republican majority in Congress and some will hold committee chairs in this Congress, running investigations on malfeasance while themselves being investigated by the Department Of Justice for treasonous crimes against the country.

2. After the insurrection, the attack on the US Capital, 147 Republican representatives came back in to the room vacated because of a violent attempt to void the election results and voted to not certify the election of Joe Biden. Virtually all of these people are back in Congress including the newly elected speaker, Kevin McCarthy.

3. To become speaker Keven McCarthy had to undermine the integrity of the legislative process in the House of Representatives by making a series of deals and commitments to the coup plotters and extremists in his party who represent a small fraction of the citizens of the United States. The public interest has been usurped in a power grab.

4. None of this is sustainable because after all, there is no honor among thieves. No coalition can be formed within this fractured body with disparate interests that hinge on personal power and celebrity. The public will be inundated with misinformation and phony investigations by Congress for two years and they will ultimately be voted out in the 2024 presidential election cycle because you can’t fool all the people all the time. After awhile even the most gullible start to catch on. Voters heading to the polls for the next election will remember the chaos that left America in a national crisis while Republicans tried to figure out how to do the most basic of functions to keep government running. If not, we will certainly remind them.
