I just sent an email to two of my state’s representatives in Congress. Perhaps I should have sent it to the third one also, even though he is a Trumpy guy through and through. Here is what I wrote. If you agree with the idea, please feel free to copy and customize it and send it to your representatives also.

Dear Sen Murkowski and Rep Peltola: I want to propose something that may be a bit premature, but that I think needs to be considered. I would like to see January 6 of each coming year designated "Democracy Day, a Day of National Reflection." This is proposed as a way to deter a tendency that I have observed, that people are now calling it "Insurrection Day" in popular speech. I doubt that it will be possible to keep people from using the name "Insurrection Day," but that tends to elevate the insurrection itself over its target, American (little d) democracy. Of course people will not forget that day in at least the short term, but I do believe that it would be very sad and unfortunate if it becomes a day to celebrate the insurrection, rather than to consider the importance and sometimes the fragility of our way of government and to support and nurture it as times and social demands on it change. An official recognition that does not elevate the insurrection but that does acknowledge the need to work to preserve our democracy might help to do that. Sincerely, X… Y...

I actually did sign my real name but it’s not needed here.

Curious therapist.
