Oscar and Monty, two rescued kitties who are now brothers enjoying the bedspread and the view.

Our gorgeous boys, Oscar, 2 years old and Monty, 6 years old. Both are rescue kitties from Save Animals From Euthanasia (SAFE) here in Busselton, Western Australia.

I adopted Monty about 3 and a half years ago, I was his foster parent, but I failed and kept him for myself. He is a Scottish Fold who was found abandoned by a local ranger in the bush, he was probably living feral for six months or so. His little front legs are deformed, which is a hazard with the breed as well as bad teeth (he’s lost 3 so far) and a couple of other things. I won’t go into all the particulars of the breed, just a few. I am no expert on the subject of kitties, just what I have learned over the last 57 years.

The boys chilling in the winter sun.

They are recent breed from Scotland (funny that) from the late 1960’s early 1970's that were discovered by accident when a regular cat had a litter of kittens. Some of those kittens had folded ears, very round heads, very little in the way of a neck, short legs and a very loyal, demanding and sensitive temperament. They are extremely loyal to their main carer, I know from experience how much Monty loves me, it gets a little creepy at times, licking my feet is right outside the boundaries!

You can't breed Scottish Folds with Scottish Folds though, if you do, you will create Scottish Folds with deformities, their legs, teeth and internal problems. If you breed a Scottish Fold with a regular domestic cat, you should end up with a half Scottish Fold litter and a half domestic cat litter.

Monty had a tooth out recently; he and Oscar like to rough and tumble, and they managed to lock their teeth together and Oscar snapped off Monty’s tooth. 3 down. They play together regularly every day, well several times a day. Monty is very devious with Oscar, one of his favourite moves is to sneak up on Oscar from behind and bite him on the butt. Oscar likes to go for Monty’s tail and also has the rugby body slam perfected.

Now Oscar; In foster care for over a year, in and out of various foster homes, including my brothers. Sent off numerous times to a new home, only to be returned to SAFE as he was too rumbunctious, rapscallionous (new word), spako, destructive and attention seeking. He is also an absolute delight for two juveniles in their late 50s and early 60s. He’s also a rebound cat. Before Oscar, there was Puss, AKA Connie. My lovely wife's 17-year-old domestic short hair.

Puss, Jill’s baby for 17 years.

When Puss passed away, Jill was heartbroken. I’ve always been one of those people who think the best replacement for a past puddy is a new one. We had Oscar in 3 days, I’d already met him while I fostered him at my brothers while he was away and knew that he was a nutter. Jill fell in love with him immediately and so did I. He is such a Dag! He likes to hang upside down, fall off things for laughs and is obsessed with every bug that shows up in the catio. We’re had him for about 10 months now and he is best mates with Monty. When it was Monty and Puss, Monty would always be hassling the old guy to play, etc, which Puss didn’t want.

Much more fun and frivolity now that Monty has Oscar, and they are looking forward to many more years of rumbunctious behaviour together.

Best mates hanging out.

It’s a rough life but someone has to do it.
