CNN politics on Apple news has an article: “Analysis: The most obvious speaker solution is also the most radical, by Zachary B Wolf, CNN, posted 5:14 pm EST 1/5/2023”
A dem/rep coalition of moderates would effectively defuse radicals. Mr. Wolf’s article outlines current and former examples — definitely worth reading. Thinking outside the prison of the red-blue divide is not only fun, but is also getting some traction around the country. Biden and McConnell both wore purple suits to visit that bridge spanning the Ohio River, signalling a willingness to move away from extremity. I know, I know — ulterior motives abound, guile and suspicion are still around. Nevertheless, the House”s radical standoff contingent would have nothing to do but gnash its teeth if moderate R’s went in Jeffries’ direction OR moderate dems gave support, for significant concessions of course, to McCarthy.
All kinds of good ripples in the pond could happen. Actually the swamp could become a pond as in Parrish’s painting, We could grow up and quit playing the game of win/lose, instead actually working together for the good of our country. Maybe even the Supreme Court would settle down, although it’s hard to imagine that at the moment.
Shakespeare (I love this 10 year old’s “mistake”: Sharpspear), in Macbeth, wrote that “Life is a tale told by and idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
Lofty words said by Macbeth in the throes of disappointment — his ambitions, like those of our right-wing opportunists, have crumbled, and he sees a universe of desolation. Presently, I think of their rants as exactly “...tale(s) told by idiot(s), full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
Coalition governance would mute their noise.
