Capitol Police hero, Ofc. Eugene Goodman, diverts MAGA insurrectionists away from the Senate chamber on Jan. 6, 2021

Democrats should insist that when the House convenes on Friday at least one more vote for Speaker be held on the second anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection.

And on the first vote Friday, Democrats should nominate not only their leader Hakeem Jeffries, but also Capitol Police hero, Ofc. Eugene Goodman, who risked his life diverting the MAGA insurrectionists from the Senate chamber and preventing more bloodshed.

When the House convenes, Goodman will be at a ceremony at the White House at noon Friday in which President Joe Biden will present him and 11 others with the Presidential Citizens Medal, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors.

A White House official told CNN that the dozen individuals were chosen for having made “exemplary contributions to our democracy” and displaying “courage and selflessness” around the events of Jan. 6.

House Democrats could symbolically cast some votes for Goodman and other police officers who fought the insurrectionists on Jan, 6. They include Capitol Police officers Harry Dunn, Aquilino Gonell, and Caroline Edwards, as well as D.C. Metro Police officers Michael Fanone and Daniel Hodges, who all testified before the House Jan. 6 select committee. These officers were injured defending the Capitol and will also be receiving medals from Biden on Friday.

Biden will also award a medal posthumously to Capitol Police Ofc. Brian D. Sicknick, who died a day after being injured in the attack on the Capitol.

On Thursday, Sicknick’s estate filed a civil lawsuit in federal court in Washington, D.C., against two rioters involved in the attack and former President Donald Trump for allegedly inciting the mob, CNN reported.

CNN reported that the Sicknick wrongful death allegation against Trump “marks the most serious accusation to date that the former president was liable for the January 6 insurrection.”

House Democrats should denounce the 118 Republicans in the new House who were re-elected despite voting to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. They did so on the evening of Jan. 6 after the MAGA mob had been cleared from the House.

And the new House freshman class of 43 Republicans includes more election deniers who support Trump’s Big Lie despite the evidence revealed by the House Jan. 6 select committee.

Five of the new House members —Reps. Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma, Eli Crane of Arizona, Anna Paulina of Florida, Keith Self of Florida, and Andy Ogles of Tennessee — were among the extremists who voted against Rep. Kevin McCarthy for Speaker.

And why not nominate Goodman?. After all, Rep. Matt Gaetz (Florida man) had the audacity to nominate Trump for Speaker on the eve of the insurrection anniversary. Trump lost again, receiving one vote.

Let’s not forget that the GOP caucus includes some members who likely were more deeply involved in supporting Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, climaxing with the Jan. 6 insurrection: Reps. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Gaetz, Paul Gosar and Andy Biggs of Arizona, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.

That’s why Democrats should spare no effort on Friday to remind Americans of the House GOP’s complicity in the Jan. 6 coup attempt as they vote again for a new House Speaker.

Biden also will be presenting the Presidential Citizens Medal on Friday to five other local officials and election workers:

— Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, who resisted strong pressure, including armed protesters outside her home, to overturn the election results.

— Republican Russell “Rusty” Bowers, then the Arizona House speaker, who refused to overturn the election results

— Al Schmidt, a Republican member of the Philadelphia County Board of Elections who ensured the vote count continued despite pressure from pro-Trump figures to overturn the results.

--- Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, a mother-and-daughter duo who both served as election workers in Fulton County, Georgia. They faced threats and harassment after Trump and Rudy Giuliani made baseless claims that they had engaged in election fraud.
