Brian Fitzpatrick next Speaker of the House
Hakeem Jeffries should step forward and help the Democrats and the country by nominating Brian Fitzpatrick for Speaker of the House. With Jeffries support, Fitzpatrick should receive all 212 Democratic votes.
Why should the Democratic House leader nominate a Republican to be Speaker, you ask. OK, I will tell you, the answer is simple. First, the Country needs to elect the Speaker of the House in order to get the government operating again. Second, Democrats have always put the interest of the country ahead of narrow partisan politics.
Why Representative Fitzpatrick? Easy, he is a leader of the House Problem Solvers Caucus, and the country clearly has a problem that must be solved without further obstruction by House Republicans. Moreover, he will require the votes of at least 6 Republicans to reach the 218 vote threshold needed to be elected. There are 25 Republicans on the Problem Solvers Caucus, and It should be possible to get 6 Republican votes from the Problem Solvers Caucus, after all, they exist to solve problems in a cooperative bipartisan manner.
Why does Jeffries need to lead this effort. Simple, Fitzpatrick will need to receive all 212 Democratic votes. If Hakeem Jeffries, himself, nominates Rep. Fitzpatrick for Speaker, this will be a clear signal to the rest of the Democrats that he fully supports the nomination, and that the rest of the Democrats should, likewise, vote for Rep. Fitzpatrick. Coupled with at least 6 Republican votes from the members of the Problem Solvers Caucus, this would constitute the 218 required to be elected Speaker.
If the Democrats, led by Rep. Jeffries make such a bold move, it will help them get bipartisan legislation passed in the House over the next two years. After all, as Speaker, albeit a Republican, Fitzpatrick would have been elected with the full support of the Democrats, and it is reasonable to assume he and the Republican members of the Problem Solvers Caucus will be able to work together, in a bipartisan manner, with the House Democrats to get necessary Legislation passed in the House. With 51 votes in the Senate such bipartisan Legislation will be passed, and signed into law by President Biden.
Thus, the Democrats and President will be able able get necessary Legislation passed over the next two years dramatically increasing the chances of Biden being re-elected in 2024, keeping control of the Senate, and possibly retaking the House. Should the Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives in 2024 they can elect Rep. Hakeem Jeffries Speaker of the House.
The Democrats must act now before the Republicans coalesce around someone other than McCarthy who may garner 218 Republican votes, and who may prove worse for the Democrats and the Country, than McCarthy would have.
