(This diary was meant for last week but I was stuck writing a diary on my phone.)

There’s annual tradition for Jews on Christmas: going to the movie theater and eating at a Chinese restaurant. It is so popular that it has become known as Jewish Christmas. I have no idea how long this tradition has been occurring but the origin of it is likely very simple. Nearly everything is closed on Christmas day especially since a large majority of the US is Christian and people want to be home with their families. Thus the only places usually open are places where the owners are not Christian like Asian and Kosher restaurants. Movie theaters are also open for some reason or another.

Since many Jews love Chinese food and want to venture away from food we are eating at Chanukkah dinners, we tend to opt to go there for Christmas. We add in a movie since we might as well make a day of it. The nice thing about the day is traffic is usually at a minimum and thus the places we are going are quiet. There is also less of a chance of dealing with latent anti-Semitism.

For a few years prior to the pandemic, it hasn’t been quiet at all requiring us to pre-plan the day less we have a repeat of the year of the movie sell-out and 1 hour restaurant wait. While we passed on going to the theater to see a movie this year (we had store stuff to take care of), we opted to watch a movie at home. We still went out to dinner at our usual place finding it much less crowded than in years passed. Whether this is because of lingering pandemic fears or inflation, I will not guess. Still, it was nice to have a more relaxing dinner.

To the Jews out there, did you partake in your usual Jewish Christmas this year? If so, what is your tradition?

I leave you with a fun song from SNL’s “TV Funhouse” cartoons sung by the wonderful Darlene Love in the style of the Brill Building songs for which she is most known with the same title as the diary.

From Crashing Vor:

I don't think I've ever nominated a staffer for Tops, but Mark's sentiment regarding Ukraine Updates is shared by all.

From AmericanAnt:

I want to recommend niemann’s comment for inclusion in the next Top Comments summary. I think this comment does a great job of cutting through the other random topics covered here and shows how to keep existential crisis front and center in the discussion. [ed. note” comment is out of rec time but submission comment is not.]
